It is undeniable that the PSVR shows its age, particularly with regard to limited monitoring due to the camera and the use of light-based devices. The reuse of the PS3 era's Move controllers arouses the IRER of its detractors. However, some developers have been able to take the move and use them quite efficiently. Rush of Blood, a launch title, is a game to do it. Saints and Sinners is another one. It's time to add another game to this list, as well as the Exclusive PSVR list, with Fracted.
Fracked is a mix of Uncharted & Blood and Truth plus a hint of James Bond - Goldeneye. Developed by Ndreams based in the UK, Fracted is a PS Move only and for a good reason. Ndreams boasts that the play environment and the interaction of players are managed on a scale of 1: 1. After playing the published demo, I can confirm it.
The demo allows you to play the first levels of the game. You start with ski in the middle of a mountain range. A helicopter arrives and deposits material so that you can communicate with the driver. You start skiing while driving up the helmet. After allowing you to acclimatize the management mechanism, things accelerate quickly. You must thwart an avalanche while your Move controllers vibrate wildly to accentuate the snow slam that is approaching rapidly.
From this opening sequence, you land in a mountain fracturing installation where an army known as Fracted does not prepare anything good. This is where the scale 1: 1 really stands out. Caisses, barrels, doors, stairs and well, everything is done on a scale. Even your virtual hands are made on a scale, so at first glance, they seem too big. Especially compared to other virtual hands you may have used. Many VR games have a virtual world, but Fracked really gives you the impression of being in a virtual world.
This is particularly evident with Fracted's ingenious coverage system. To protect you from enemy shots, you must enter an object, for example a box or a balustrade, which will then allow you to dodge and cover you. From there, you can lean or get up to fight back. Simple but brilliant by adding to your immersion. When you add to the cover mechanism, fast-walking shootings with a free locomotion system, all of this is in addition to a lot of fun.
The movement is not limited to a single plan. You can also climb thanks to hand mechanics on hand. The addition of verticality to the game allows a more complex level design. The fight is also controlled by the player. Not only do you target weapons, but you must also recharge them and arm them. All this is done via a touchback with the Move controllers. The presentation of Fracted is luminous, colorful and made in an artistic style in the shade of the cells in which the PSVR excels. The game is very similar to Borderlands VR in this regard.
The PSVR between perhaps in its twilight phase with the imminent output of the PSVR2 in 2022, but exclusive games like Fracted, released on August 20, seek to make this transition graceful.
