Externalism is a group of positions in the approach of mind which suggests that the mindful mind is not just the result of what is taking place inside the nervous system (or the mind), but additionally what takes place or exists outside the subject. It is contrasted with internalism which holds that the mind emerges from neural activity alone. Externalism is an idea that the mind is not simply the mind or features of the brain. There are various versions of externalism based on various beliefs regarding what the mind is required. Externalism emphasizes variables external to the nerve system.
