Externalism is a group of settings in the philosophy of mind which says that the aware mind is not only the result of what is taking place inside the nerve system (or the brain), but also what occurs or exists outside the subject. It is contrasted with internalism which holds that the mind emerges from neural activity alone. Externalism is an idea that the mind is not just the mind or functions of the mind. There are various variations of externalism based on various ideas regarding what the mind is required. Externalism emphasizes aspects external to the anxious system. At one extreme, the mind might potentially rely on external variables. At the opposite extreme, the mind necessarily relies on external factors. The extreme sight of externalism suggests either that the mind is made up by or similar with processes partly or totally external to the worried system.
